Public housing and hawker centres are ubiquitous in the Singapore landscape and both have achieved international recognition. From being labeled by the British as having some of the worst slums in the world, public housing in Singapore or what is commonly known as HDB, has become one of the most successful in the world and has been awarded three UN awards over the last 25 years. And in 2020, Singapore’s hawker culture is listed as one of UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.
We will visit Toa Payoh, one of the first public housing projects in Singapore. Hear about the hows and whys of the Housing Development Board. Visit the HDB Hub and see displays of the various apartments and learn why these apartments are considered as marriage propositions! On the second part of the tour, we will head to one of the most popular hawker centres in Toa Payoh to ‘makan’! Some of the stalls there are so famous that locals from other parts of Singapore will travel there just to savour what some consider as ‘die die must try’! So let’s join Singaporeans in their ‘community dining room’ to indulge their favourite past time. After satisfying our stomachs, we will have a quick jaunt in the neighbourhood
Additional Notes :
Please bring your EZ link card as we need to travel by bus from one place to another. There is a lot of walking, please put on comfortable footwear that is easy to slip on/off as we have to remove our shoes at the entrance to the show flats.
