Guided Tour: Chinatown

233 233 people viewed this event.

Join us for the next guided tour with Charlotte Chu to discover the Heritage of Chinatown, a tapestry of cultural diversity.

This tour is ideal for people who are new to Singapore or for those who wish to refresh their knowledge of the place.

Once an enclave for Singapore’s Chinese immigrant population, the Chinatown of today is much-beloved for its blend of old and new, with historic temples and traditional medicinal halls alongside bars and lifestyle shops. The area is great testimony to our rich, multi-ethnic, multi religious society with Singapore’s oldest Hindu temple, one of the oldest Mosque and a fascinating Buddhist temple, all within a short stretch of 250m. And in the past, different Chinese dialect groups were allocated different areas within Chinatown.

We will visit a clan association to learn why they played such a crucial role for the early Chinese immigrants. As we amble along, we will also pass some of the lovely murals, which tells the story of life gone by. And of course, food being such a huge part of Singapore, we will sample some interesting snacks in the largest hawker centre on the island. And when the tour ends, you can make your way to another very popular hawker centre for lunch (optional, at own expense).
